Hi to everyone,
Physical therapy ended yesterday for Dad. They say he has hit a plateau it seems and so they won't continue it. The main reason is Medicare. You only get 100 days of nursing home coverage for life and they don't want to use it all up now. We really appreciate that. He can remain at Archstone as a paying client. The sisters there have found a nice assisted living place in Mesa that they hope to take Dad to see. They have not been able to take him out as long as Medicare was paying, that ends Wednesday I believe. Dad has said he wants to stay there at Archstone or go home. I think he wants to try living alone again, but none of us are to excited about that. We certainly understand his desire to to go home.
Please keep him in your prayers. He is feeling a lot better and has gained some strength back which is wonderful, but he is still not running any marathons!!
His mind remains sharp as a tack which means we aren't going to boss him around. HA Just pray that everyone will know what is best for him.
Thanks again for caring,
Laura

Hello to all,
Dad is doing a lot better!! He was transferred to Archstone Care Center on June 26th. I am sorry I haven't written before now, but I have been down in bed with a bad cold. ugh!
Dad is getting physical therapy two or three times a day. Not too sure how he feels about that, but hopefully it will help him get up and around. Melinda is leaving the beginning of this week. Chris, Nancy and Starr of course will still be there in town.
The Address of this place is: Archstone Care Center
1980 W. Pecos Road
Chandler, AZ 85224
Dad is in Room 116.
It is located at Pecos and Dobson. He will probably be there at least a couple more weeks. There is hope that we can find a woman to come in a few hours a day to the house so Dad could come home. If any of you know someone who might be interested doing that let me know. I know he would be happier at home. This is all difficult for everyone. Please keep them all in your prayers.
Thanks for all the emails! I am printing them off and sending them on. I can't print pictures and videos, but have enjoyed them. I hope all of you are well.
Love,
Laura

Hello to all,
This is Laura, Tom's fourth daughter. I am writing to let you all know that Dad has been pretty sick and in the hospital this week. He may be discharged today and will go into a nursing home for the time being. Nancy, Melinda, Chris and Starr are there in Tempe with him and are searching for the best place for him.....whether home or in some facility. I spent last month there with him because he had been in the hospital the first part of May and was very weak. He has lost a lot of ground and we are concerned about him. Please keep him in your prayers.
The emails you all send him are the main bright spot in his day and mean a great deal to him. He checks them more than once during the day (when his computer is not on the fritz), and enjoys them lots. My request is that you continue to email him, but send them to my address: leprins@msn.com and I will print them and mail them to him. I thought about getting him a laptop, but he is so shakey I don't think he could use it. It would mean so much to him to remain in touch with all of you. I will keep you posted on where he is and how he is doing. All of you are his only contact with the outside world!!!
Thanks for caring!!

ANNUAL FIRE BAN TO BE IMPLEMENTED
ANNUAL FIRE BAN TO BE IMPLEMENTED
County Parks set May 26 as start date for annual fire ban
(Phoenix) - The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department will
initiate its annual fire ban beginning Tuesday, May 26. "The
vegetation in the parks dried out quickly this spring due to the warm
temperatures and lack of rain. Not unlike previous years, this has
left the parks with a large quantity of ground coverage that could
easily catch fire," stated Maricopa County Supervisor Max Wilson, Chairman, District 4.
"This year, the fire ban will be initiated after Memorial Day weekend.
This will allow those camping in the parks to have a campfire.
However, due to the dry conditions, the ban will be implemented
immediately following the holiday. The ban includes the use of
campfires, fire pits and charcoal grills. It is still acceptable to
use gas/propane grills in designated areas," added Wilson.
A fire ban is initiated to limit the possibility of starting a brush
fire, which could cause serious damage to the parks. Violation of this
park rule, Rule 113, may result in a citation. A date to lift the fire
ban has not been designated and will be determined by the amount of
rain Maricopa County receives during the monsoon season.
There are ten Maricopa County parks that will be affected by the fire ban:
Lake Pleasant Regional Park, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Adobe
Dam Regional Park, Buckeye Hills Regional Park, Estrella Mountain
Regional Park (excludes turf area), San Tan Mountain Regional Park,
Usery Mountain Regional Park, McDowell Mountain Regional Park, Cave
Creek Regional Park, and Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area.
Smoking in the parks is still permissible, but all park users are
strongly encouraged to be responsible in their use and ensure that all
cigarettes are properly extinguished and placed in trash receptacles.
If you have any questions regarding the fire ban, call the Maricopa
County Parks and Recreation Department at (602) 506-2930, or visit
www.maricopa.gov/parks.

ALL ABOARD FOR “DISNEY’S
A CHRISTMAS CAROL” TRAIN TOUR
FROM SNEAK PEEKS OF EXCLUSIVE 3D FILM FOOTAGE
TO SUMMERTIME SNOW – DISNEY PULLS OUT ALL THE WHISTLE STOPS FOR 40-CITY TRAVELING EXPERIENCE
Departing Los Angeles May 22; Tour to Cover More Than 16,000 Miles
Burbank, Calif. (May 8, 2009) -- Disney is pulling out all the whistle stops and taking its show on the road with a spectacular immersive and interactive 40-city train tour including a 3D sneak peek of film footage from the upcoming movie “Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” it was announced today (05/08/09) by Dick Cook, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. Set amidst a snowy backdrop—complete with all of the sights and sounds of Christmas including carolers, decorations, giveaways and many more surprises in each of the 40 cities—the Train Tour is being launched with HP on board as the title and technology sponsor and driven by Amtrak. This family event is for guests of all ages and is free to the public.
Starring Jim Carrey and directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” opens in theatres November 6 in Disney Digital 3D™ and in IMAX 3D®.
Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, “‘Disney’s A Christmas Carol’ Train Tour is an incredibly fun way to introduce families across the country to the wonders and spectacle that is Robert Zemeckis’ unique and spectacular new holiday film. We are so proud of the movie, and think the 3D footage is so incredible, we just had to give everyone a chance to see it in Disney Digital 3D. From Los Angeles to New York, and all points in between, guests are going to have a fabulous time discovering things about the making of this extraordinary film, participating in their own festive fantasies, and getting into the holiday spirit all year round. ‘Disney’s A Christmas Carol’ is great entertainment for moviegoers of all ages, and this is the perfect introduction to a fun and exciting new holiday classic.”
Among the highlights of the tour are authentic artifacts on loan from the Charles Dickens Museum of London; artwork, costumes and props from the film; demonstrations of performance capture technology; and a chance to morph your face into one of the film’s characters using HP TouchSmart PCs. At each stop along the way, a state-of-the-art Disney Digital 3D Theatre will be erected, where guests can get a sneak peek of “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” and see other exclusive behind-the-scenes materials from the movie. The latest details about tour stops and scheduled events are available at www.christmascaroltraintour.com.
Featuring four custom-designed vintage rail cars full of behind-the-scenes attractions, entertaining demonstrations, and fun activities, the tour will have its inaugural stop at Los Angeles’ Union Station over Memorial Day Weekend, from May 22nd through May 25th. During the next 24 weeks, the train will make 40 stops in 36 states, as it travels its way across more than 16,000 miles of track. The tour will finish at New York’s Grand Central Terminal over the weekend of October 30th through November 1st.
At every tour stop, Radio Disney will invite kids to enter for a chance to become a Movie Surfer representing their hometown. Each Hometown Movie Surfer will get a chance to appear on Disney Channel by filming their very own Movie Surfer’s segment! They’ll also receive a prize package of exclusive Movie Surfer and "Disney’s A Christmas Carol” gear.
ABC television stations across the country will run local promotions. At each stop, guests will have the chance to win an HP TouchSmart PC and an HP Photosmart wireless printer. Additionally, Disney is working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America organization to provide an early Christmas experience to kids across the country. Disney will present the organization with a donation in the amount of $100,000 at the May 21st launch in Los Angeles to further the organization’s efforts of helping kids grow up to be great and will invite Boys & Girls Club kids to be part of the tour when it comes to their town. Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the nation are impacting the lives of 4.8 million young people each year with after-school programs that emphasize education, career exploration, community service, technology skills, financial literacy, the arts and more to help them reach their full potential as productive, caring citizens.
A variety of innovative HP technologies helped to make the Train Tour possible. HP ProLiant servers and HP ProCurve switches will provide Disney with the computing power that will allow guests to collect and upload photos. Throughout the train exhibits, Disney is using HP TouchSmart PCs to run an interactive face morph application and HP monitors to showcase performance capture technology as well as images and digital effects from the film. Additionally, each train car will be wrapped with Disney’s Train Tour logo using the versatility of HP Scitex printers.
“For decades HP and Disney have joined together to captivate audiences through technology innovation and digital entertainment,” said Michael Mendenhall, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, HP. “HP technology used in the making of ‘Disney’s A Christmas Carol’ has enabled Disney to push the boundaries in performance capture technology. The Train Tour offers an innovative way for guests to interact with HP’s latest technology and experience the magic behind the film.”
Amtrak locomotives and engineers will lead the four-car Train Tour (plus a private car), across the US, with stops ranging from 1-3 days along the way. Each train station will be themed with holiday decorations, and feature artwork from the film, Christmas Carolers, fun activities for the entire family, and snow!
“Rail travel continues to influence the way people connect with each other and celebrating the release of a true classic is a perfect way to further that connection,” said Emmett Fremaux, Vice President Marketing and Product Management, Amtrak. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be teaming up with Walt Disney Studios for this 40 city tour to help educate Americans about the benefit of rail travel.”
ABOUT THE MOVIE
“Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” a multi-sensory thrill ride re-envisioned by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, captures the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale in a groundbreaking, performance-capture 3D motion picture event. Ebeneezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) begins the holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman) and his cheery nephew (Colin Firth). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey, revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late. Through the magic of performance-capture technology, Jim Carrey tackles seven roles, including Scrooge and all of the Christmas spirits.

Hey, I just wanted to share this with you guys. We had some friends from California out visiting their family in Phoenix. I didn't arrange it nor did I know they were going but they made a trip out to the park this week. Bud and Bob were their hosts for the tour. They posted the picture below on Facebook.
I made the comment that they met the Waterworths. My friend, Jeff, replied "Yep. Extremely nice people and they were terrific guides for our visit. Since we weren't going to be in town on a Sunday this visit, Ilene's Mom managed to arrange with them for our private Thursday tour and train ride. It was really an outstanding experience."
Great job guys. You guys are the face of our hospitality and it doesn't go unnoticed.

Dear Stephanie;
It was a pleasure working with you and the club on the Maricopa Live
Steamers portion of the Adobe Mt. Railroad Park segment for Tracks Ahead.
Thanks ever so much for your hospitality and help during the
videotaping. I will transfer the footage for post production once we return to Milwaukee.
I'm sure everything turned out just fine. The material will be
inserted into the new season which will be released around the end of
2010. An advance approval copy of the segment will be made available
to you prior to release.
I plan to give serious thought to coming out to the club, either as a
member or as a volunteer. As I indicated, I need a mission, so you
may indeed see me in the future. And thank you for the information and sales pitch.
Please extend our thanks to all the members who were so gracious and
giving of their time and resources to help us out.
Once again, thanks for your hospitality and for making our job so much
easier. I hope that you enjoy the new release of Tracks Ahead.
Best Regards;

Tracks Ahead
A very BIG THANK YOU to all the members who came out to work on the filming and make it so worthwhile. The film crew was very impressed by our efforts, the membership turnout and the volume of trains in the yard and on the railroad. We had over 500 public riders on Sunday to manage as well. It would not have been so successful without everyone's help. It was fun and it was exhausting! MLS is an amazing organization and the members are the one's who make it all happen! We're scheduled to air in the 2010 season. the program was not picked up by PBS here locally. Se we need to start campaigning station now to pick up the show. Again, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Hello Everyone,
This is a Railroad Casting Call for MLS Trains and Members!
The film crew for the PBS TV Series Tracks Ahead will be at the park filming this weekend. They are scheduled to film AMRS on Saturday, 4/4 and MLS on Sunday, 4/5. Filming starts each day around 9 AM. There is no set schedule for where or how long they will be filming, so plan on making a day of it if you can.
The producer would love to have many, many engines and trains in the yard and out on the railroad for filming. All freight trains, steam engines and passenger trains are welcome. Who knows, you could be the next best discovery into the infamous world of trains, perhaps the next Clark Gable, or Harrison Ford, or Sean Connery, or Pierce Brosnan. or hmmmm...

Friends Night
February 21, 2009
Here is a fact you can consider: If you missed the February 21 friends night, you might as well have both your feet in the grave cause you ain’t living. You are just pretending to! Chief cook and bottle washer, Joe Schnyder cooked up bratwurst, hamburgers, cheese burgers and hot dogs to a motley group of 37 people. It was hard to tell who had the largest turnout of people for an event that evening, MLS or the ball field across the street. Promptly at 5:00 pm the bell rang signaling it was time for beans so all gathered up at Ford Station to partake of the fine menu of food and share in some good conversation with what could be described as generally great people. There’s a few quirks in there but pay no attention and you’ll be fine. If you decided not to talk, it was possible to listen in on the various conversations that were going on. For example, Bob Alkire let loose with a litany of his knowledge on how to organize and operate a warehouse effectively. That has always been one of my main topics of interest so you can imagine my joy when I got to listen to it for about 30 minutes. All I need now is a warehouse and I am in business. And then there was talk of cameras for those interested in photography. Jim Manley and my son-in-law, Robert Hernandez, talked cameras for awhile. I have always pictured Jim as the geeky electrical type but apparently he has an inkling for snapping a shot or two too. We know he can photo shop pictures like no one else but I didn’t think he knew how to click a shutter button. See what you can learn by coming to an event like this? The interesting thing is the conversations carried on and on and nobody got mad or upset over anything. The cares and concerns of the world were left behind for a bit and everybody just let life be.
After stuffing and out talking one another it was time to hit the high iron and roll some trains. No less than 11 locos were called to operate that evening. Running after dark offers a nice change from daylight running but one has to be on the lookout for wild life and if noticed, word is put out to the other trains to be aware. Thankfully the only wild life that was noticed and reported to be seen along the tracks that night turned out to be Bill Pardee who claimed he was checking out signals. Yeah right! Tarzan he is not.
So another friends night has come and gone. If you haven’t attended one, you are missing one of life’s nicer things. By not coming, you are short changing yourself of the good company of those that make up this club, but worse, you are depriving others of your good company. I encourage you to come on out to the next friends night and meet and talk to your fellow club members and enjoy the world’s greatest hobby! See you there.

I was looking for photos of the SP4449 and came across something I just couldn't believe. What I found was a picture of an (previously owned by Amtrak Now officially owned by friends of SP4449) EMD F40PH #231 in daylight light colors.

Here is the #231 awaiting to enter the repair shop along with 3 cars, one of them being a Daylight passenger car.
Thanks to our sponsors.

The following is an extract from our upcoming Stack Talk
"Adding an extra 20' to the existing car barn would allow the MLS to store complete public trains rather than having to break them up at the end of each run day and then having to re-assemble them at the beginning of the next. The project would require some expense and there wasn't money readily available in the treasury for the structure once the footing was poured. A simple request to Home Depot explaining who we are and what we do resulted in a $600 Gift Card donation which was then used to buy materials to build the structure. The photos show the barn after the materials were fabricated into the new section.

It is through the generous assistance of organiztions such as Home Depot that the MLS is able to do the expansion we need done to better help us further our public service efforts. Thanks Home Depot! (www.homedepot.com)"
"We were able to build the car barn expansion but were then faced with the task of roofing it. The MLS internal resources to do the roofing were unavailable for the immediate future. A phone call to a nearby roofing company - Dry Plus Roofing - translated into a request for help. After explaining the 501(c)(3) nature of the MLS, Kevin Keith, an owner, stopped by the park to see what the project entailed. The end result was his donation of a 2-man crew to come out and do the roofing. Additionally, he was able to find shingles that matched the existing ones and sell them to the MLS for less than what we would have paid for a non-match elsewhere. On the agreed day, his crew arrived and the roofing began. Pat Courtney began laying shingles on the new section while Johnny Lopez began doing the work to install the new skylights

.
When the work was finished, the new section was almost indistinguishable from the old section .

This shows the quality and professionalism in the work done by Pat and Johnny and speaks well of Dry Plus Roofing. Thanks again Kevin and Dry Plus!

The steam locomotive that pulls the Copper Spike is a Heisler geared locomotive built in 1917 for the Craig Mountain Lumber Company at the Heisler Locomotive Works in Erie, Pennsylvania.
These full-length dome cars were built in 1954 for the Santa Fe Railway and were used on luxury long-distance trains. They feature seating for 66 passengers on the upper level, with a 22-seat dining area on the lower level. These cars are air-conditioned and restroom-equipped. Due to the dome stairs, they are not wheelchair-accessible. Seating is open.
The Calumet Club car was built as coach for Illinois Central Railroad in 1918, and later rebuilt into an observation- lounge car in 1947 and features art deco styling with luxury and comfort.
From Tucson it is advised to to take 77 to Oracle Junction, 79 to Florence Junction and 60 to downtown Globe and Broad Street. From metropolitan Phoenix, Highway 60 is easily accessed by major routes and can be taken to downtown Globe and Broad Street.
